The Rover P6 Series is a series of executive sedans built by The Rover Co. Ltd., Leyland Motors and British Leyland from 1963 to 1977. Designed by Spen King, Gordon Bashford and David Bache as a replacement to the Rover P4 and P5, the P6 was a complete “clean sheet” design intended to appeal to a larger number of buyers. A highly successful automobile, 322,302 were produced; the designers of the P6 would later move on to create the highly successful Range Rover. The P6 would be replaced by the SD1.
Two P6s were rebuilt by British Leyland’s Competition Department in 1968 as race cars intended to comply with FIA’s Group 2 regulations. The cars, competing for Bill Shaw Racing, featured a Traco-built Rover V8 bored out to 4.3L with Weber carburetors making 270 BHP, a Muncie 4-speed transmission and a Jaguar differential. Both cars still exist; one was moved to Australia and converted to a sport sedan, while the other remains in the United Kingdom in largely its original configuration.
